Regular Thurs Ride
Ride starts @ 7pm from Barnes & Noble, 700 S Capital of Texas Hwy
Thurs, effective July 22, 2010 - Start ride at 6:30 PM
Informal ride for experienced riders
This is a weekly ride every Thurs evening. Primary Ride: Leave West Ridge MS and ride to the 360 Bridge over Lake Austin and back. This is a strenuous 20 mile C-3/4(P,F). Alternate Rides: 1) Start at 7:00 PM from Barnes & Noble/Starbuck's at 700 S Capital of Texas, 2) Easier hills - ride south to Walsh Tarlton vs to the Rusty Bridge. Remember minimum group of 2! |
We need volunteers to lead rides and provide support so we can have multiple level rides at the same time. For safety, on WUMC Hosted Rides we always ride in groups of no less than 2, depending on ride rating, and obey all traffic laws. Cyclists must obey the same traffic laws as vehicles when riding on the road. Bike helmets are required.
Ride Ratings:
To assist with determining your interest in a particular ride we will rate WUMC Hosted Rides based on expected average speed (A-E), general terrain difficulty (1-5), ride specific footnotes and length in miles. For example a Veloway ride may be rated as A/B-1 (G,B,H); A/B - speeds generally around 10-12 mph , 1 - mostly flat with possible gently rolling hills, G - ride as a group (stay in sight), B - leader brings up the rear at around 12 mph or with slowest rider, H – entire group stops for maintenance and leader helps with fixes.
Average Cycling Speed
Difficulty
A – average speed <10 mph
1 – Mostly flat to gently rolling hills, generally < 3% grade
B – average speed 10 - 12 mph
2 – Mostly flat to mildly rolling hills, generally 3%-5% grade
C – average speed 13 - 15 mph
3 – Flat with rolling hills, some 5%-8% grade
D – average speed 15 -18 mph
4 – Some flat, rolling hills, some steep up to 8%+ grade
E – average speed >18 mph
5 – Some flat, many hills, some steep up to 10%+ grade
For comparison, Redbud Trail from the light to the church is a 10%+ grade (actually 14%+). The climb from 360 on Bee Cave Rd west bound to approximately Knollwood Dr/County Line BBQ is a 4-5% grade. The little dips on Bee Cave Rd east (toward Westlake Hills) from Redbud Trail just before The Hills Fitness would be 2-4% grade (parts slightly steeper but they are very short – needless to say not an exact science but we do the best we can)
WUMC Hosted Ride descriptive footnotes:
Group – Riders stay as a fairly well formed group (at least within visible sight) and fully regroup at ALL stops - planned stops or for maintenance stops
Pack – Riders may form packs of 2 or more that split from the main group but regroup at planned stops
Back – Leader rides in back of pack at around the slowest level rated speed or slowest rider, e.g., on a “B” ride leader would spin at 10-12 mph +/- as last in group
Front – Leader rides in front or in the pack as appropriate
Help – Leader helps with flats and other problems – entire group stops with leader
These guidelines are for the Westlake UMC Bike Club. There is no real “standard” as each bike club establishes their own rating based on their desires.
